There are a variety of reasons to raise a home or structure.  The most common reason is due to flooding.  Sometimes flooding will occur simply because the structure was built too low originally.  Flooding can also be caused by changes in the land upstream.  Sometimes the existing basement is in good shape, but it is too simply too short or the well is not at a proper height. 

Raising a home is also done for aesthetic reasons as well.  Maybe the ceiling height in the basement is too low and the owners want to utilize their basement as a secondary living space.   Another possibility is to raise just the roof or the whole house to add a new floor.
